Futons

Futons are a great modern-day choice for home furnishings and college dorms because of their simple style and economical construction. Futons are also popular in many households because they provide an extra bed whenever it’s needed. Today’s futon meets the needs of people who appreciate its simple beginnings; yet innovations in style, material, and function appeal to an increasingly wide range of furniture buyers.

The futon is an expression of traditional Japanese style
Traditionally, Japanese futons fit perfectly into the long-lived cultural ideal of function and versatility. Futons were stuffed with available soft materials like cotton or silk. For sleeping, the futons were placed over tatami mats anywhere on the home’s floor (tatami mats provided padding and served as architectural guidelines—houses were designed to hold a chosen number of mats). Upon retiring, an occupant might use another futon as a blanket. Then, to completely clear the room for other purposes, futons conveniently folded and stored away inside closets made just for futon storage.

The futon in America
During the 1960s, futons became popular with people seeking simple, socially unconventional lifestyles. Futons were inexpensive (many being handmade) and they never made a room seem stuffy or cluttered. Over time and with increasing popularity, futon manufacturing increased, occupying a significant portion of the furniture industry.

A new and very different futon
The futon mattresses of today can be filled with wool, cotton, polyester or other synthetic materials. The modern futon is much thicker and more rigid than its ancestor, varying in weight, flexibility and support, depending on the stuffing materials used. Also, the contemporary futon is supported on a convertible frame, an addition developed in America.

Though certain luxurious features can be found in the contemporary futon, its roots in simplicity and versatility are still evident. Futons provide easy convenience in practically any furnishing arrangement.
